Local/State Briefs PREP FOOTBALL GICC planning hamburger grill Friday night The Grand Island Central Catholic football team will play Centura at 7 p.m. Friday at Memorial Stadium in Grand Island. The Central Catholic Dance Team will host a Hamburger Grill, starting at 6 p.m. prior to the game. Cost of a hamburger, chips and drink meal will be $4. Additional activities will include split the pot, halftime kicking contest, dance team performance, mini-cheerleader camp performance and the a fifth- and sixth-grade football scrimmage. Crusader clothing, including Football Jerseys and season passes will also be available for purchase. Greeley-Wolbach kickoff time set for 7 p.m. The kickoff time for Friday's Greeley-Wolbach football game against Arnold at Wolbach has been moved back to 7 p.m. The game had previously been announced as having a 6 p.m. kickoff. COLLEGE VOLLEYBALL Hastings College spikers sweep GPAC match at Dana BLAIR -- The NAIA No. 18-ranked Hastings College volleyball team defeated Dana 25-20, 25-20, 25-18 Wednesday night in Great Plains Athletic Conference play. The Broncos (18-1, 3-0 GPAC) were led by Jill Whalen with 15 kills and Kelsey Hansen with seven kills on 12 attempts for a .416 hitting percentage. Leading a balanced offense for Hastings was setters Joey Amerine and Lyndi Rouzee, who both had 20 assists. Defensively, Melynne Kessler led the Broncos with 12 digs, while Christina Headrick and Whalen followed with seven digs apiece. Sophomores Leah Dostal and Kelsey Wells recorded two blocks each. Hastings hosts a triangular Saturday, playing York College at 1 p.m. and Kansas Wesleyan at 5 p.m. at Lynn Farrell Arena. COLLEGE SOCCER Bronco women record double-OT road victory LINCOLN -- The Hastings College women's soccer team won its Great Plains Athletic Conference opener in dramatic fashion, defeating Nebraska Wesleyan 2-1 in double overtime. Junior Jesse Herse opened the scoring as she would score her team-leading fourth goal of the season to put the Broncos (3-2, 1-0 GPAC) ahead 1-0. Nebraska Wesleyan responded with less than seven minutes remaining to tie the match at 1-1. Casey Friesen scored the game-winner off an assistant from Hastings native Hannah Wray to lead the Broncos to victory. The Broncos will be back in action on Saturday in Orange City, Iowa when they take on Northwestern College at 5 p.m. Nebraska women hosting two first-time foes LINCOLN -- The Nebraska women's soccer team will host two first-time foes this weekend, in its final preparations for the upcoming Big 12 schedule. Playing in their third and fourth games in an eight-day span, the Huskers will face North Dakota State at 5 p.m. Friday and Stephen F. Austin at 1 p.m. Sunday. NU kicks off conference play the following weekend with home matches against Kansas and Missouri. Live stats and audio will be available for both games through Huskers.com. CROSS COUNTRY Huskers look to defend team titles at Woody Greeno LINCOLN -- Fans will have the opportunity to catch the Nebraska cross country team at home for the only time during the 2008 season this Saturday as the Cornhuskers will play host to the 19th Annual Woody Greeno/Husker Invitational at Pioneers Park. Annually, the Invitational draws a strong contingent of fans and with the Husker football team having a bye week, it is expected to be another well-attended meet. The women's 6K race will be run first at 10 a.m. with the men's 8K race to follow at 10:45 a.m. The Woody Greeno/Husker Invitational has been dominated by the hometown Huskers in recent years. The Nebraska women's team has won the meet three straight years and four of the last five years. The men's squad has posted back-to-back wins and has won the meet three times since 2000. AUTO RACING Mid-Nebraska Speedway set for season finale Saturday DONIPHAN -- Mid-Nebraska Speedway will finish its 2008 season Saturday with its final day of racing and its annual demolition derby following the races. Gates open at 5 p.m. Racing starts at 7 p.m. Admission for adults is $10 and $5 for kids (ages 6-12) while children age 5 and under will be admitted free. Pit passes are $20 and season passes will be honored.
